Learn from Humanities PhD alumni as they share how their education at UChicago has prepared them for career success.Our panelists will explore the following questions:

- When and how did you decide that you did not want to pursue a career in academia?
- What skills, or habits of mind, from your PhD do you draw upon in your current role?

About the Panelists:
Courtney Wiersema is an Associate Director of Graduate Career Development at UChicagoGRAD. She serves as the dedicated career advisor for graduate students in the Humanities Division, Divinity School, and Department of History. She also co-directs PATHS (Professional Advancement and Training for Humanities Scholars), an NEH-funded initiative to diversify career options for Ph.D. recipients in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. A historian by training, Courtney draws upon her writing, research, and teaching skills to help humanists articulate and achieve their professional goals.
Carly Buxton, AM'12, PhD'16 leads qualitative market research and user research as Director of Market Insights at EF Education First, the world leader in international education. Also a historian and PhD graduate of the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (2016), she specializes in semiotics and the influence of the physical environment on human behavior. Carly continues her history research part-time and is working with the University of Hawai'i Press to publish her first book in 2020. She lives in the Boston area with her husband and daughter. 
Shaleane Gee, PhD'02 directs strategic partnerships, funding collaborations and policy initiatives that achieve the Mayor's vision for the Salt Lake metropolitan region. She advises the Mayor and works with national, state, and private partners to develop action around regional challenges, entrenched social problems and unique opportunities to maximize public benefit. This includes policy initiatives on regional planning, public asset management, homelessness, housing, criminal justice, and child stability. Shaleane previously served as Assistant Dean and Executive Director of Architecture + Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah and Associate Dean at the University of Chicago. A Utah native, she received a BA/MA in English from the University of Utah and a PhD with an emphasis in American literature, law and political history from the University of Chicago.
